Assessment of Domestic Wastewaters as Potential Growth Media for Chlorella vulgaris and Haematococcus pluvialis

Domestic wastewater contains chemical compounds that can be used as nutrients for microalgae. Removing these from by microalgae might help in reducing the operation cost of management while minimizing cultivation large-scale metabolite production. In this study, domestic collected Indah Water Konsortium (IWK), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was assessed growth media two types microalgae, namely Chlorella vulgaris and Haematococcus pluvialis. The biomass nutrient removal efficiency total nitrogen (TN), phosphorus (TP), ammonia (TAN) different concentrations diluted were measured. results showed concentration (0.227 g/L), productivity (0.029 g/L/day), specific rate (0,284 d-1) yielded C. 14 days 80% comparable to those grew standard Bold’s Basal medium (BBM). Besides, 50% remove TN, TP, TAN with highest (>88%). For H. pluvialis, all lower than BBM. efficiencies TN TP 55%, but more wastewater. Hence, has better performance These findings indicated IWK could especially vulgaris.
